It has been a year that ALIA Multicultural Committee members have been meeting, planning and delivering PD, sharing blogposts, eNews, working on sub-projects and celebrating members who attended and presented at a number of conferences.
|
ALIA Multicultural now has over 400 subscribers to our eNews. This is proving to be a solid base to share key information with a Multicultural focus.
|
In our final meeting of 2023 we planned for 2024 and evaluated our communication platforms.
|
We just launched the ALIA Multicultural Linkedin page to continue sharing and growing the professional network.
|

Human Rights Week December 3 to 10
|
|
|
International Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Visit the Victorian equal opportunity and Human Rights Commission action for Human Rights Week to learn more.

Building staff capability with relevant PD

The State Library of Western Australia recently provided two zoom sessions for WA public library staff:
|
“Speak My language: Libraries and Multilingual Engagement”.
|
This was designed for libraries across metropolitan and regional Western Australia. The workshop was led by Henrietta Podgorska, Chair of Multilingual Australia.

- Accessibility Issues
- Community Engagement
- Utilising Local Resources
- Creating a Welcoming Environment.
This workshop was targeted at library professionals aiming to broaden their understanding and capabilities in serving multilingual communities across Western Australia.

There was a very high level of interest in these sessions, with 104 public library staff attending. The sessions were informative and well received by public library staff. In 2024, the State Library WA will be running further sessions with Henrietta, about delivering multilingual Storytime sessions.
