SUMMARY:Amplifying Multicultural and Multilingual Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore initiatives that celebrate and acknowledge the multilingual and multicultural landscape at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). It highlights the Say My Name campaign – a decolonial approach into celebrating and acknowledging names deemed ‘tricky’\, ‘unfamiliar’ or ‘foreign’ in Anglo linguistic contexts. \nThe presentation also discusses the campaign’s research extension\, Say Our Names\, which gathers data on multicultural workforce experiences and offers tools for fostering culturally inclusive environments. Additionally\, the AoC (Acknowledgement of Country) project will be discussed\, focusing on connecting Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and Culturally and Racially Marginalised (CARM) communities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander reconciliation efforts through a translation project wherein the AoC was translated into 37 languages and spoken out loud and recorded by the translators. \nThrough such language and cultural engagement\, the project aims to build meaningful connections\, support reconciliation and celebrate linguistic diversity. These efforts resonate with multicultural library services and library staff across Australia and will soon be made available online for everyone to use. \n \n\n\n\n\nSpeaker:Dr. Elaine Laforteza\, UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion. Dr Elaine Laforteza is a Filipino migrant to Australia. She has a PhD in Cultural Studies and is the Equity and Diversity Project Officer (Cultural Diversity) at the UTS Centre for Social Justice & Inclusion. She has held academic positions at Macquarie University\, Charles Sturt University\, and UTS. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals and community media\, and her book The Somatechnics of Whiteness and Race is available through Routledge. Elaine hosts SBS’s award-winning podcast\, My Bilingual Family\, and is also an emerging playwright\, producing plays for various festivals in Sydney. She recently sold one of her plays to Fae Pictures\, a TV and film production company that aims to decolonise Hollywood. She is currently working on a TV script with Fae Pictures on a comedy series. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register

SUMMARY:Digital Health Literacy for Refugees
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to participate in a Research webinar led by Bhuva Narayan delivered via ALIAMulticultural. \nExplanation: This is an extension of Health NSW (Multicultural Health Services) project on DigitalHealth Literacy for Refugees. There is some information about the original project here:https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/multicultural/Documents/digital-health-literacy-poster.pdf \nMy project\, funded also by NSW Health\, is looking at public libraries’ role in multicultural andmultilingual services for refugees and asylum seekers. Some points to note:1. I have ethical clearance for the workshop\, and I will be asking participants to send theattached form back to me or to agree verbally during the workshop.2. The workshop will be recorded for purposes of transcription but will not be disseminatedanywhere. A Zoom link will be sent out prior to the workshop.3. All data collected will be anonymised and de-identified4. This is a third in a series of workshops: the first was with refugees and bilingual translators(conducted in person at the Fairfield Library where some of the librarians participated also)\,and the second was an in-person workshop with refugee community leaders conducted atUTS. Both workshops have been so rewarding and have already produced some positiveresults for the community\, just by sparking conversations and by connecting people.5. The results of all three workshops will be analysed and published as a report for NSW Health(Multicultural Services) and also as research articles in journals. ALIA NSW MulticulturalGroup will be duly acknowledged in any outputs. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register

SUMMARY:(Re)imagining the future of multicultural collection
DESCRIPTION:Fifty years on\, how should we (re)imagine multiculturalism in Australian public libraries? Public libraries have been stocking multicultural and multilingual items\, but library collections and services and how library users access them have greatly changed in the last fifty years. In this webinar\, using the case study of a Trove list project and a collaboration with NSW State Library\, Joey Chung and Alice Chik will present and discuss the ways multicultural items can be used to (re)imagine Australian public libraries as multicultural and multilingual spaces. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register

SUMMARY:Enriching library service with Information eXperience Design
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive workshop on Information Experience Design (IXD)\, where we blend theory with practice to enrich library services. Delve into the theoretical insights from a study on refugees’ information literacy\, then collaborate with peers to brainstorm innovative library interventions inspired by the findings of the study. \nThis hands-on session offers a unique chance not just to learn about IXD\, but also to actively engage in implementing this approach. Leave with practical strategies to boost information literacy in your refugee community\, fostering greater social inclusion and empowerment for this community. \nBefore the workshop\, we encourage you to take a quick look at the findings section of the paper to enhance your understanding of the topic. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register
